Gone are the days when webmasters use to rank high on the organic search results for competitive terms by keyword density, keyword research and back linking madness. Search engines are deploying sophisticated algorithms to combat practices that lead to poor search content.
The legend of the Google Panda and Penguin has led to many site owners abandoning their intention to pursue search engine optimization (SEO) for ranking in the organic search listings.
However, any serious digital marketer can’t afford to ignore SEO methods as a means to generate traffic and ultimately revenue online.
Latent Semantic Index
Instead of working against the search engines, work with them by using latent semantic indexing (LSI) methods on your site.
LSI is a SEO method that make use of expert keywords and phrases that are common to a niche. LSI is coupled with a silo website structure to create content that demonstrates expert knowledge and therefore high quality for searchers.
A niche site has to contain expert verbiage that is native to the subject matter. For example, a site covering golf has to have all the expert terms such as: irons, putting, PGA tour, golf swing, tee ball, greens and so on.
Additionally, for a webmaster to rank and overcome the competition in the niche, the LSI algorithm compares the new site with other sites that have high trust. If the new site does not have the keyword and phrases associated with the niche then it will not rank high.
LSI takes this a step further by also looking at the keywords that are related throughout your whole site. That is why I have consistently advocated that webmasters implement the ekasi approach when starting their online career. That is, make sure that the niche you choose is compatible with your skill or experience.
Search engines have made it difficult to fool the industry with thin content. You will not be able to demonstrate authority when you don’t have credibility.
To abide by the dictates of LSI and therefore achieve a high ranking in search listings, there are certain practices a webmaster need to implement:
Carefully think through the purpose of your website
The purpose of your website will be reflected on the navigation of your website, the backbone of LSI is in the navigational structure and anchor text linking of our site. This is what is called a silo structure.
To do this, you have to come up with, say, 5 categories that encapsulate the purpose of your site. The purpose of your site will be reflected in your categories. For example, a golf site will have the categories of; golf courses, golf clubs, golf balls, golf shoes, golf news. The categories will then be used as themes or menu items and have anchor texts linking within each theme.
Only add content that is relevant to each theme
Your expert verbiage will then be added as content within each related theme. It is important that you only add relevant content to the specific theme. For example, you can not add content about golf clubs in the golf shoes silo.
The search robot will be confused and unable to make sense of your post in relation to the purpose of your site. This is what is called theme bleeding. Theme bleeding will hurt your rankings and must be avoided by making sure that you adhere to the silo structured posting.
Create anchor text links with each silo
When you follow the LSI approach, your site will start to have the right keywords and phrase (provided that you are subject matter expert) in the right place. This the expert verbiage we talked about in the beginning of this article. This keywords are what will cause your site to rank in the search engines.
The short tail and long tail keywords that you want to rank for and are related to golf will have to be turned into anchor texts by creating links. However, the links can only be within each silo. You also can’t link to an external post that is not related to your silo.
Each silo with each anchor text links will energize the robots to compare your site with other sites with the same subject matter and rank it accordingly.
Moreover, when you execute this simple approach, you entire site will have keywords that are related in all things to do with the subject matter (golf) and be deemed an authority site.
The SEO industry is constantly changing, but the business of providing quality information for the search engine clients is timeless. As a webmaster, focus on quality and align your website to be deemed 100% relevant in your niche through LSI. Your job of conquering the search engine results pages will be so much easier.
